Cragside is a historic estate and country house situated near the town of Morpeth in Northumberland, England. It was built in the 19th century by industrialist and inventor William Armstrong and was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Cragside is set amidst a sprawling 1,000 acre estate of gardens, parkland and woodland, which encompass two lakes, a rock garden, fountains, rhododendron terraces and other features. The house itself contains many of Armstrong’s inventions including an electric bell system, a hydraulic lift and one of the earliest central heating systems with hot-air pipes beneath the floorboards. The house has been owned by the National Trust since 1977 and is open to visitors.
