South Elmsall is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield, in the county of West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the A638 road, and has a population of 11,348.

The town is twinned with the French town of Laon.

South Elmsall was originally a small hamlet, but grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution as it became a coal mining town. The coal mines have now all closed, but the town has retained its strong community spirit. There are a number of shops and businesses in the town centre, as well as a library, a health centre and a leisure centre.

There are several primary schools and a secondary school in South Elmsall, as well as a sixth form college. The town also has its own football team, South Elmsall United, who play in the Northern Counties East Football League.
