About Shipley in West Yorkshire
Shipley is a town in the metropolitan borough of Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. It had a population of 28,462 in 2001. Shipley is situated in Airedale, at the confluence of the River Aire and the River Bradford. It is 8 miles west of Leeds and 6 miles north east of Bradford. The town is served by Shipley railway station on the Airedale Line and Leeds Bradford International Airport is located nearby.
Shipley was a small market town in the West Riding of Yorkshire until the Industrial Revolution when it became a centre for the flax and wool industries. The town's growth continued into the 20th century as it became a commuter town for Leeds and Bradford.
The town has a number of parks and green spaces, including Roberts Park, which is home to Shipley Art Gallery, and Peel Park which hosts the annual Shipley Festival. There are also a number of sports clubs and leisure facilities in the town.
