Pudsey is a historic market town, with a market having been established here since the 12th century. The town's name is derived from the Old English for 'place of prayer or psalm singing'.

Pudsey is twinned with Birstall, also in West Yorkshire.

The town's most famous resident was the Victorian novelist Anne Brontë, who lived here for a short time in 1845.
