About Liversedge in West Yorkshire

Liversedge is a town in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, England. It lies on the A62 road between Bradford and Huddersfield, and is served by Liversedge railway station on the Huddersfield Line. The town had a population of 11,550 in 2001.

Liversedge is built on the hillside above the River Calder. It was originally two separate villages, Gomersal on the east bank and Liversedge on the west. The two were separated by a stream called Spen Dyke. The name "Liversedge" is first recorded in 1233 as Livresheved, and means "ledge or shelf of land by a river".

Liversedge was a centre for the woollen industry in the 19th century. The town was served by canals and railways which brought coal from Lancashire to power the mills. There were also many quarrys in the area which supplied stone for building.

Liversedge is twinned with Schmalkalden in Germany.
