Hemsworth is a town in West Yorkshire, England. It is located on the River Aire, and has a population of 21,597. The town is twinned with Saint-Amand-les-Eaux in France.
Hemsworth was first settled in the 6th century by the Angles. The town was originally called Hammersworth, which means "homestead of the hammer-wielders". In the 12th century, the name was changed to Hemmersworth, and then to Hemsworth in the 18th century.
The town's main industry is coal mining, and it was once a major centre for the coal mining industry in Yorkshire. The last coal mine in Hemsworth closed in 2002.
The town has a number of parks and green spaces, including Hemsworth Water Park, which is home to a number of water sports facilities. There is also a golf course and a number of walking and cycling routes.
