About Cowling in West Yorkshire
Cowling is a town in the Craven district of North Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the A65 between Skipton and Colne, and has a population of 3,747.
The town was founded by the monks of Fountains Abbey in the 12th century, and was originally known as Cowla or Coupla. The name probably comes from the Old English word for a small enclosed valley.
Cowling grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the industrial revolution, and became known for its textile mills. The town's population peaked in the early 20th century, but declined thereafter as the industry declined.
Today, Cowling is a thriving market town with a variety of shops and businesses. It is also home to Cowling Primary School, Cowling Community Academy and Craven College.
