About Castleford in West Yorkshire

Castleford is a town in West Yorkshire, England, west of Leeds and north of Wakefield. The town had a population of 32,128 at the 2011 Census.

Castleford is the administrative centre of the Metropolitan Borough of Wakefield and has historically been part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. The name Castleford derives from the castle built in the 12th century by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, and his wife Ada de Warenne. The castle was located on the banks of the River Calder, on a site now occupied by a shopping centre.

The town's market charter dates from 1294, and its market is still held weekly in the town centre. There was also a weekly market held in the nearby village of Airedale until it was stopped in the early 20th century.

The town is home to Castleford Tigers RLFC, who play in the Super League, and Castleford RUFC.
