About Brighouse in West Yorkshire

The town of Brighouse is situated in the Calderdale borough of West Yorkshire, England. It is located on the River Calder, 4 miles (6.4 km) east of Halifax and 12 miles (19.3 km) west of Leeds. The town had a population of 32,369 at the 2011 Census.

Brighouse was originally a small market town, and its name is derived from the Old English "brig" meaning quay or landing-place, and "hous" meaning house or dwelling. The town's market charter was granted by King John in 1204, and its first market cross erected in 1222.

The town grew rapidly during the Industrial Revolution, becoming an important mill town with several large textile mills. It was also known for its engineering industries, particularly its iron foundries and machine shops.

The town declined in the late 20th century as its industries went into decline, but has since been regenerated with the help of European funding. Brighouse is now a thriving commercial and business centre with a wide range of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are also several parks and open spaces in the town, including Wellholme Park, Clifton Park and Crow Nest Park.
