About Birkenshaw in West Yorkshire
Birkenshaw is a town in West Yorkshire, England. It is situated on the A58 road, between Bradford and Leeds. The town has a population of 9,173 (2011 census), and is in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees.
Birkenshaw was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, when it was called Bircheshaw. The name probably comes from the Old English words birc + sceaga, meaning "birch wood".
The town grew up around the textile industry, and there are still several mills in operation. There is also a large engineering works.
Birkenshaw has a number of schools, including a secondary school, a sixth form college, and several primary schools. There are also a number of churches, including St. John the Baptist Church, which dates from the 13th century.
