About Bingley in West Yorkshire
Bingley is a town in West Yorkshire, England. The town is situated on the River Aire and the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is surrounded by countryside. It is 10 miles (16 km) west of Bradford, and 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Leeds.
The town has a population of 18,294, according to the 2011 Census, and is made up of several villages including Bingley town centre, Eldwick, Gilstead, Harden, Wilsden and Crossflatts.
Bingley was first recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as "Bingheleia". The name is thought to derive from the Old English for "Beonna's clearing" or "Beonna's glade".
The town grew rapidly in the Industrial Revolution as a centre for the woollen industry. It continues to be a commuter town for Bradford and Leeds.
Bingley has a town council and is twinned with Oudenaarde in Belgium. It hosts an annual five-day music festival, called Bingley Weekender.
