About Baildon in West Yorkshire

Baildon is a town in West Yorkshire, England, within the Bradford Metropolitan Borough. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Baildon is situated 4 miles (6.4 km) north-west of Bradford city centre and 11 miles (17.7 km) west of Leeds city centre. The town had a population of 17,674 in the 2011 Census.

Baildon appears in the Domesday Book as "Bailintone". The name is thought to derive from the Old English bailin, meaning "farmstead or hamlet", and tūn meaning "enclosure, farmstead or village".

In medieval times Baildon was a manor held by the de Baildon family. The manor house was at Hall Cliffe on Northgate, Baildon. In 1620 George Calverley built a new manor house called Baildon Hall on East Chevin Road. The hall was demolished in 1788.

The parish church of St John the Baptist dates from the 13th century and is a Grade I listed building. It was extensively restored in 1859 by William Milnes.

The village green at Baildon Bank Top is the site of the annual Baildon Folk Festival which takes place on the first full weekend in June. It features over 50 acts performing on five stages over the course of the weekend.
