About Armadale in West Lothian

Armadale is a town in West Lothian, Scotland. It is located on the River Almond, and has a population of around 9,000 people. The town is twinned with the town of Armadale, Victoria in Australia.

The history of Armadale can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was known as Aulddalemuir. The name Armadale is thought to come from the Gaelic for "the height of the Dale", referring to the town's location on a hill.

Armadale was once a thriving industrial town, with coal mines and textile mills. However, these industries have now declined, and Armadale is now a commuter town for Edinburgh and Glasgow.

The town centre of Armadale has a variety of shops, cafes and restaurants. There is also a library, swimming pool and leisure centre. The town is home to Armadale Academy, a secondary school which was recently rebuilt.

Armadale is surrounded by countryside, and there are many walking and cycling routes in the area. The Almond Valley Heritage Centre is located just outside the town, and is a popular tourist attraction.
