About West Lothian

West Lothian is a county located in the central belt of Scotland. The county borders the City of Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and the counties of Midlothian, East Lothian and Falkirk. The county town is Livingston.

The county of West Lothian was created in 1996 from the historic county of Linlithgowshire, which had been created in the 12th century. The name "West Lothian" comes from the Scottish Gaelic name for the area, "Lothain an Iar".

The county has a population of approximately 172,000 people. The largest town in the county is Livingston, with a population of around 55,000. Other towns in the county include Bathgate, Broxburn, Linlithgow and Whitburn.

The economy of West Lothian is largely based on manufacturing and service industries. Major employers in the county include Diageo, Amazon, Royal Mail and Tesco.

West Lothian is home to a number of tourist attractions, including Linlithgow Palace, Hopetoun House and Beecraigs Country Park
