About Hebburn in Tyne & Wear
Hebburn is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of South Tyneside, in North East England, on the south bank of the River Tyne. Historically part of County Durham, it is about 6 miles (10 km) east of Newcastle upon Tyne. It had a population of 30,271 in 2011.
Hebburn is located in the historic county of Durham, and was originally a small village situated on the banks of the River Tyne. The name Hebburn is derived from the Old English for "river bend". In the early 19th century, coal mining became an important industry in the area, and Hebburn rapidly expanded to become a large town.
The town's population peaked in the 1950s at around 35,000, but declined thereafter as the coal mining industry went into decline. The last coal mine in Hebburn closed in 1986, and since then the town has undergone regeneration. Today, Hebburn is a thriving community with a diverse range of shops, businesses and amenities.
