The county borders Monmouthshire to the east, Newport to the south, and Caerphilly and Blaenau Gwent to the west. The northern border is with Monmouthshire, and the eastern border is with Newport. The southern border is with Caerphilly, and the western border is with Blaenau Gwent.

The county has a population of approximately 86,000. The majority of the population live in the urban areas of Pontypool and Cwmbran. The county is predominantly white, with a small minority of Asian and black residents.

The economy of Torfaen is dominated by the service sector. Manufacturing and agriculture are also important to the local economy. The county is home to a number of major employers, including Honda, Rolls-Royce, and Admiral Insurance.

Today, however, most industry has ceased in the area and it has become more reliant on tourism and service industries.
