About Eynsham in Oxfordshire

Eynsham is a historic market town in Oxfordshire, England, 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Oxford. It is on the River Windrush in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, just east of Witney. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 3,983.

Eynsham grew rapidly in the early Middle Ages as a coaching stop on the London–Chester road, and later on the Witney–Oxford road. It was an important staging post for royal messengers and for military mail en route between Normandy and Wales. The village was depopulated by the Black Death in 1349, but revived in the late 15th century. It remained a thriving market town until the coming of the Oxford Canal and railways in the 19th century caused a decline in its fortunes.

The parish church of St Leonard dates from the 12th century and has a 15th-century tower. The building was restored in 1864–66 by G. E. Street. The tower has a ring of eight bells, all cast by Mears and Stainbank of the Whitechapel Bell Foundry in 1866. St Mary's Church in Woodgreen is a chapel of ease dating from 1874.

The Oxford Canal passes through the town, and there are also several nature reserves nearby.
