About Bloxham in Oxfordshire

Bloxham is a town in Oxfordshire, England. It is situated on the River Cherwell, about 5 miles (8 km) north of Banbury and 10 miles (16 km) south-west of Oxford. The 2011 Census recorded the parish's population as 4,870.

The town's name is derived from the Old English for a block or tree trunk. It was first recorded in 1133 as Blochesham. The Church of England parish church of Saint Mary the Virgin dates from the 12th century. The town's market charter was granted in 1227.

In 1790 James Brindley's Oxford Canal reached Bloxham, and in 1794 the Oxford Canal Company built Bloxham Wharf on the east side of the town. The wharf was used to trans-ship agricultural goods from barges to road transport. It was abandoned in 1962 when the canal was closed north of Heyford Wharf.

The Great Western Railway opened a branch line from Banbury to Bloxham station in 1864. The line closed to passengers in 1951 and to freight in 1964.

Bloxham has a Non-League football club Bloxham F.C., which plays at Bloxham Mill Field.
