About North Sunderland in Northumberland

North Sunderland is a town in Northumberland, England. It is situated on the north bank of the River Wear, about 2 miles (3.2 km) upstream from its mouth at Sunderland. North Sunderland is part of the borough of South Tyneside.

The town has a population of about 4,000 people. It is the birthplace of the writer and broadcaster Bill Bryson.

North Sunderland was originally a fishing village. It grew rapidly in the 19th century as a result of the coal mining industry. The town's port was used to ship coal to other parts of England and Europe.

The town's economy declined after the coal mines closed in the early 20th century. North Sunderland is now a commuter town for people who work in Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland.

The town has a number of schools, including North Sunderland High School, which was opened in September 2009. There are also several churches, including St. Andrew's Church, which dates from the 13th century.
