About Norfolk
Norfolk is a county located in the East of England. It borders Lincolnshire to the northwest, Cambridgeshire to the west and southwest, and Suffolk to the south. With an area of 2,074 square miles (5,370 km2) and a population of 859,400 in 2015, it is the fourth-largest ceremonial county in England. Of the county's population, 40% live in four major built up areas: Norwich (213,000), Great Yarmouth (63,000), Kings Lynn (46,000) and Thetford (25,000).
The Broads is a network of rivers and lakes in the east of the county, extending south into Suffolk. The area is a popular tourist destination, with boating, fishing and windsurfing being among the most popular activities. Norfolk's coastline along the North Sea presents a number of leisure opportunities, including sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing.
Thetford Forest is the largest lowland forest in Britain and covers an area of 280 square miles (730 km2). The forest is home to a number of rare and endangered species, including the red squirrel, otter, nightingale and water vole.
Norfolk is notable for its historic buildings and architecture. Norwich Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Europe, while Norwich Castle is a fine example of a Norman castle. Other notable buildings include St Michael's Church in Houghton-le-Spring, which is one of the largest parish churches in England; and Elsing Hall, a moated manor house near Dereham.
The county is also home to a number of stately homes and country houses, such as Houghton Hall, Holkham Hall and Sandringham House. Norfolk also has a number of museums and galleries, including the Norfolk Museum Service which operates a number of museums across the county; and the Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery, which houses a collection of artworks from across Europe.
Norfolk is a rural county with a strong agricultural tradition. The county's soils are some of the richest in England, and Norfolk has a long history of arable farming. Today, Norfolk's farms produce a wide variety of crops, including wheat, barley, oats, oilseed rape, potatoes and sugar beet. Norfolk also has a thriving livestock industry, with cattle, sheep and pigs being raised on many of the county's farms.
Norfolk has a number of food producers which supply local restaurants and shops with produce grown or reared in the county. These include Norfolk Dairies, which produces milk and ice cream; Norfolk Fruit Growers Association; and Norfolk Honey Company. There are also a number of microbreweries in Norfolk, such as Woodforde's Brewery and Wolf Brewery.
Norfolk is well-connected to the rest of England by road and rail. The county has two main airports: Norwich International Airport and Norfolk International Airport. There are also a number of smaller airports located within Norfolk
