About Caldicot in Monmouthshire
Caldicot is a town in Monmouthshire, Wales, situated on the River Severn, close to the border with England. It is approximately 12 miles (19 km) from Newport and 25 miles (40 km) from Cardiff. The town has a population of 5,614 (2011 census).
Caldicot Castle is a Norman castle situated on a hill above the town. The castle was built in the 12th century by William fitzOsbern, 1st Earl of Hereford, and played an important role in the Norman conquest of Wales. The castle was later owned by the Earls of Worcester, who rebuilt it in the 14th century.
The town's name comes from the Old English caldecote meaning "cold cot" or "cold shelter". Caldicot is twinned with Saint-Cyr-sur-Loire in France.
