Dalkeith is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, on the south bank of the River North Esk. The town has a population of 12,342 people, making it the fourth largest settlement in Midlothian. Dalkeith is Midlothian's administrative centre, and its most populous town. It has a long history dating back to the 12th century, when it was created as a Royal Burgh. Today, Dalkeith is a thriving town with a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as a variety of historical and cultural attractions. The town is also home to Dalkeith Palace, a former royal residence which is now open to the public.
