About Prescot in Merseyside
Prescot is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Knowsley, Merseyside, England. Historically in Lancashire, it had a population of 34,324 at the 2011 census.
Prescot is first recorded in 1177 as one of the bequests in the will of Hugh d'Avranches, 1st Earl of Chester, to his daughter Maud. In 1228 William de Ferrers, Earl of Derby obtained a charter for a weekly market. The market cross dates from 1484.
The town's motto is Post Tenebras Lux, Latin for "After darkness, light". This was the motto of Hugh d'Avranches, and refers to Prescot being the last place in Lancashire to be illuminated by the setting sun.
The parish church of Prescot Parish Church is dedicated to Saint Paul. It has been a Grade I listed building since 1885. Parts of the church date back to 1310, with later additions made in the 15th and 16th centuries. The tower was added in 1725. The church was restored in 1885 by J. S. Crowther.
The town was home to Prescot Cables F.C. who played at Volair Park until their demise in 2012.
