About Haydock in Merseyside

Haydock is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens, Merseyside, England. It lies on the edge of the West Lancashire Plain, 8 miles (13 km) east of Liverpool and 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Manchester. In the 2001 census, Haydock had a population of 21,554.

Historically part of Lancashire, Haydock was created a civil parish in 1866 and an urban district in 1894. The urban district was abolished in 1974 and its former area was merged with that of other districts to form the Metropolitan Borough of St Helens.

The name "Haydock" is derived from the Old English "hēafod", meaning "head" or "chief", and "ac", meaning "oak"; thus it means "chief oak". This is probably a reference to a large oak tree that once stood at the centre of the village.
