About Bebington in Merseyside

Bebington is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral, in Merseyside, England. It lies on the Wirral Peninsula, on the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite Birkenhead. Historically part of Cheshire, Bebington is 8 miles (13 km) southwest of Liverpool and 15 miles (24 km) northeast of Chester. The town has a population of 20,078, making it the largest settlement in the borough.

Bebington was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1066 as being part of the Hundred of Wirral. The name is thought to derive from Old English beo "bee" + inga + tun, meaning "the estate associated with a man called Beo". In 1253 it was granted a charter by King Henry III, making it a free borough.

The town grew rapidly in the 19th century as part of the Industrial Revolution, with industries including coal mining and chemical manufacture. Bebington became a municipal borough in 1901, and merged with other parts of the borough in 1974 to form the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral.

Today, Bebington is a residential suburb with a town centre containing a number of shops and businesses. The town is home to several schools and churches, and has a number of parks and open spaces. Bebington railway station provides links to Liverpool and Chester, and the town is also served by buses.
