About Glasgow in Lanarkshire
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland, and the third largest in the United Kingdom. It is situated on the River Clyde in the country's West Central Lowlands. Glasgow grew from a small rural settlement on the River Clyde to become one of the largest seaports in Britain. By the 18th century it was one of Britain's main industrial centres, with a wealth of shipbuilding, coal mining and textile manufacturing industries. Glasgow was also known as a major centre of the Scottish Enlightenment and of the Industrial Revolution, and for its internationalism and radicalism.
Today, Glasgow is a major cultural, economic and educational centre in Scotland. The city has many museums, galleries and theatres, as well as a variety of architectural styles. Glasgow is also home to two universities, several higher education institutions and a number of hospitals.
