East Kilbride is a large town in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is the sixth largest settlement in Scotland and the largest town in South Lanarkshire. It is also one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. The town lies on the south side of the Clyde River, and has a population of around 73,000 people.
The history of East Kilbride can be traced back to the 12th century, when it was a small village known as 'Kilbride'. It grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming a large town with a population of over 30,000 by the early 20th century. East Kilbride was designated as a New Town in 1947, and was one of the first New Towns in Scotland. It has since expanded greatly, and now has a population of over 73,000.
East Kilbride is a popular shopping destination, with two large shopping centres - The Centre and The Plaza - as well as many smaller shops and businesses.
