About Putney in London

Putney is a town in Greater London, England, located on the south bank of the River Thames. It is 6.3 miles (10.1 km) southwest of Charing Cross and forms part of the London Borough of Wandsworth. Putney has been a settlement since at least the 12th century and was an important coaching stop on the London to Winchester turnpike road. The town's history is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086, which shows that it was then an important manor with extensive farmland. In the 16th century, Putney was a popular resort for wealthy Londoners who came to enjoy the river breezes and watch horse races on Putney Heath. The first bridge across the Thames was built at Putney in 1181, and the current bridge, which dates from 1886, is a Grade II* listed structure. The area around Putney Bridge has been redeveloped several times and is now home to a number of office, retail and residential buildings. Putney High Street is a busy shopping street with a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. There are also a number of schools and colleges in the town.
