About Flintshire
Flintshire is a county located in the north-east of Wales. The county town is Flint. The county has a population of approximately 150,000 people.
The county is bordered by Wrexham County Borough to the east, Cheshire West and Chester to the south, Denbighshire to the west and Conwy County Borough and the Irish Sea to the north.
The county is named after the historic county of Flintshire which was abolished in 1974. The area covered by the present-day county of Flintshire was originally part of the Kingdom of Gwynedd.
In 1284, Edward I of England conquered Wales and divided the country into counties. Flintshire was created as one of these counties. The county was divided into two parts, English Flintshire and Welsh Flintshire.
The English part of Flintshire was further divided into hundreds, each administered by a hundred court. The Welsh part of Flintshire was divided into cantrefs, each administered by a commote court.
The English hundreds were: Bromfield, Coleshill, Maelor Saesneg, Mold, Prestatyn and Rhuddlan. The Welsh cantrefs were: Rhufoniog and Tegeingl.
The county town of Flint is located in the English part of Flintshire. The town was founded by the Normans in 1093 as a fortified town. Flint Castle was built by Edward I in 1277.
The town grew rapidly in the 19th century due to the industrialisation of the county. The town's main industries were coal mining and steel production.
The town's population declined in the late 20th century as the coal mines and steelworks closed down. The town now has a population of approximately 8,000 people.
The county's other main towns are Mold and Prestatyn. Mold is located in the Welsh part of Flintshire and has a population of approximately 10,000 people. Prestatyn is located in the English part of Flintshire and has a population of approximately 11,000 people.
The county's landscape is varied. The Clwydian Range runs through the centre of the county and includes Moel Famau, the highest point in Flintshire at 554 metres (1,818 feet). The Dee Estuary forms the border between Flintshire and Wrexham County Borough
