About East Lothian

East Lothian, on the south-eastern coast of Scotland, is one of the 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, the Scottish Borders and Midlothian. The county town is Haddington, while other large towns include North Berwick, Tranent, Dunbar and Musselburgh. East Lothian is also home to the world-renowned golf courses at Muirfield and North Berwick.

The name East Lothian derives from the Kingdom of Lothian, a Brittonic kingdom which encompassed most of what is now southeastern Scotland. The kingdom was divided into West Lothian and East Lothian by the River Forth.

East Lothian was historically a rural county, with a population of just over 86,000 in 1971. However, since the 1980s it has undergone something of a transformation, with a significant increase in population and economic activity. This has been driven in part by Edinburgh's growing commuter belt, as well as inward migration from other parts of Scotland and beyond.

Today, East Lothian is a prosperous county with a diverse economy. Agriculture remains important, but there are also significant numbers employed in tourism, retail and manufacturing. The county is also home to a number of high-tech companies, attracted by its skilled workforce and proximity to Edinburgh.

East Lothian is a popular tourist destination, with its coastline, countryside and golf courses all proving popular attractions. The county is also home to a number of historic sites, including Preston Mill, Tantallon Castle and Dirleton Castle.

East Lothian is well-connected, with good road and rail links to the rest of Scotland and beyond. Edinburgh Airport is also within easy reach, providing international connectivity.

Overall, East Lothian is a thriving county with much to offer residents and visitors alike. It has a rich history and culture, beautiful scenery and a thriving economy, making it an attractive place to live, work and visit.
