About Dorchester in Dorset

Dorchester is a historic market town in the county town of Dorset, England. It is situated on the River Frome eight miles (13 km) west of Poole and 25 miles (40 km) east of the county town of Dorchester. The town was founded by the Romans in the 1st century AD as a garrison town and is one of the oldest towns in Britain. It has a population of around 19,000 people. The town's economy is largely based on tourism and its proximity to the Jurassic Coast, a World Heritage Site. The town has a variety of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes, as well as a number of primary and secondary schools. There are also several museums and art galleries in the town, including the Dorset County Museum and the Teddy Bear Museum.
