About Exeter in Devon

Exeter is a historic city in Devon, England. With a population of 129,800, it is the 27th-largest city in the United Kingdom and the second-largest city in the South West, after Bristol. The administrative centre of Devon, Exeter has an urban area population of 228,000 (2011 census).

Exeter was the most south-westerly Roman fortified settlement in Britain, although there is evidence a Cornish tribe existed in Exeter before the Roman invasion. The city walls date back to around AD 70 and the city was given its city charter by King William I in 1100. It was during the medieval period that Exeter first established itself as a centre of trade and commerce and it was also during this time that Exeter Cathedral was built, which was to become one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the country.

Exeter experienced a period of decline during the 18th and 19th centuries but began to regenerate in the early 20th century. The city's economy is now largely dependent on tourism and higher education; the University of Exeter is based here and there are also two large hospitals.

Exeter is a beautiful city with a rich history and plenty to see and do. It is home to a number of museums and art galleries, as well as a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes. The quayside is a popular spot for visitors, with its lively atmosphere and views of the River Exe. The city also has a number of green spaces, including Northernhay Gardens, Belvoir Park and Exwick Meadows.
