About Cartmel in Cumbria

Cartmel is a small town and civil parish in the South Lakeland district of Cumbria, England. The town is situated on the River Eea, about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of Ulverston and 5 miles (8.0 km) north-east of Grange-over-Sands. The parish had a population of 1,445 at the 2011 census.

The town is home to Cartmel Priory, a 12th-century Augustinian priory founded by William Meschines, Earl of Chester. The priory church contains the tomb of St Waltheof, one of the last Anglo-Saxon saints.

The town is also home to the L'Enclume restaurant, which has been awarded two Michelin stars.

Cartmel is a popular tourist destination, with visitors attracted by its history, scenery and walking opportunities in the nearby Lake District National Park.
