About Wilmslow in Cheshire

Wilmslow is a town in Cheshire, England. It is located on the River Bollin, south of Manchester, and is part of the Greater Manchester Urban Area. The town has a population of 34,673, making it the second largest town in Cheshire East.

The town was first recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 as Wilmeli or Wilmeslowe. The name means "Wīgma's mound or barrow", and probably refers to a burial mound of a Saxon chief called Wīgma.

The town's history is closely linked to the Earls of Stamford, who were its lords for many centuries. The Earls built a castle in Wilmslow in the 12th century, which was later replaced by a manor house. The manor house was destroyed by Parliamentarian troops during the English Civil War, and the Earls never rebuilt it.

The town grew rapidly in the 19th century as a result of the Industrial Revolution. It became a popular commuter town for workers in Manchester and other nearby cities.
